We design our own curriculum, with creativity at the heart of our teaching
Our system meticulously meets the criteria set by the National Curriculum of England, however, it is also complemented by our creative curriculum.
We address different learning styles through engaging lessons and give everyone the opportunity to shine, regardless of their talent.
The Caxton Way
Our purpose is to enable our students to become well-rounded individuals who can make the world a better place. The Caxton Way weaves together 3 different threads: Academic: to develop cognitive skills, Co-curricular: to reveal a love of sport and art-culture, and Human: to cultivate values. These three threads help build a comprehensive educational journey for our students.
Subjects
Pupils are given the opportunity to learn in a wide range of situations, both inside and outside of the classroom. Each topic starts off with something exciting to grab their attention, such as a talk from one of our visiting professionals which is related to the topic, a workshop, or even by revealing an interesting object. Once the pupils are paying attention and are motivated then they are ready to learn. Topics finish with an ‘exit point’, the final product of the project and the element that makes the learning experience purposeful. Pupils strive to complete projects to a high standard and show a true sense of pride at their achievements.
All subjects are taught in English, except for Spanish, Social Sciences and Valencian language.
Art encourages the pupils to think creatively, make decisions, experiment, explore and discover things by themselves. Pupils learn about artists from around the world as well as different techniques and historical artistic movements. They also have the chance to use different materials and tools to design and make their own works of art.
We aim to make science an interesting and attractive subject and it is fully integrated into the creative curriculum. Pupils develop scientific language, knowledge and conceptual understanding through biology, chemistry and physics-based topics. We provide opportunities for pupils to develop their skills, creativity, knowledge and understanding of Science through a range of activities. They participate in first hand practical activities, visit the Secondary science labs and also develop their use of ICT through Science.
PE is taught by three specialist teachers, who strive to ensure all pupils experience and enjoy a wide range of physical activities and encourage them to have a healthy, active lifestyle. Activities take place indoors and outdoors, and also off site during their orienteering morning and golf trip.
Taught in English, this subject enables pupils who choose to follow it to develop personally as caring members of the community with feelings of self confidence, self worth and high esteem. They will learn to value themselves and the environment around them, as well as to better understand other people and cultures.
We aim to inspire pupils’ curiosity and fascination about the world and the people in it. Through the creative curriculum they learn about places, people, resources, natural and human environments, and also develop an understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.
The guidelines from the National Curriculum are used, although the topics studied at Caxton College are those relevant to our children, enabling them to gain a sound grasp of local and world history. Pupils research, take part in role play activities, go on day trips to local historical landmarks and receive visits from historical people! We aim not only to inform but also inspire their inquisitive minds.
Pupils develop computational thinking and creativity through Computing and so it is taught both discretely and also within the Creative Curriculum. A combination of Computer Science and Digital Literacy helps pupils to become responsible and active participants in a digital world. Pupils develop confidence in using a range of technology independently, such as, Personal computers, iPads, programmable robots and 3D printers for design projects. Pupils visit the Technozone every week and they have access to iPads which are used to enhance learning and creativity. Pupils from Year 5 upwards bring their own iPad to school for use in all areas of the curriculum, when appropriate.
Throughout Primary, pupils develop spoken word skills, fluency in reading a range of fiction and nonfiction, an enjoyment of literature including novels, plays, short stories and poetry, skills in research and using the library and the ability to write a variety of texts for different purposes and audiences.
Developing a love for reading is a priority for all of our pupils. Each classroom has a welcoming and inviting book corner and children are encouraged to read every day. Communication through talk is a key element of learning throughout the curriculum.
We are a ‘Talk for Writing’ school and engaging fiction and nonfiction texts are at the heart of this, providing pupils with inspirational material on which to base their own creative writing.
At school we believe the Spanish language and culture are very important. We want our students to learn about their surroundings and for them to feel motivated to learn. We stimulate their curiosity through practical activities, group work and reading selections related to the topics they are learning in lessons in line with the ‘Creative Curriculum’ methodology. The flexibility of our schemes of work allows us to strengthen the abilities of all of our pupils whilst aiming for excellence but at the same time respecting the individuality and uniqueness of each one of them.
Mathematics is taught separately from the creative curriculum, although mathematical skills are often an integral element of it. Our rigorous programme ensures that all pupils make rapid progress. Pupils become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, developing conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
Music classes are delivered by two specialist teachers. In the classroom, all pupils are taught the fundamentals of music and are introduced to a wide range of musical genres and instruments. The music department also teaches all pupils in Key Stage 2 to play a musical instrument. They also have the opportunity to become part of the Primary Choir which performs within and outside of school.
Starting in Year 2, students who choose to study Religion have one lesson per week, taught in Spanish.
These lessons contribute to the overall development of the child. Religious and moral education provides pupils with the tools to be conscious of their actions and abilities. Our aim is to promote our pupils’ love and respect for life through the teaching of Christian values whilst respecting freedom of religion throughout our community.
Caxton College has a Roman Catholic chapel where the school’s chaplain, the Reverend Vicente Calabuig, offers a monthly opportunity for any pupils who wish to have time for prayer, confession and preparation for their First Communion. Also, during the month of December, the chapel remains open in order to celebrate Christmas with the singing of carols.
Our aim is for pupils of different nationalities to achieve a basic level of the Valencian language through a clearly communicative, practical and progressive approach.
Our aim is for international pupils to attain competence in the Spanish language as a tool for communication that will help them to integrate more fully into new surroundings, a new culture and a new school, and allow them to express their needs, make new friends and value a new culture including its foods, traditions and different routines.
Assessment
Reporting
Written reports are uploaded to the Parent Area at the end of each term.
These show both the attainment and the effort grade for all subject areas. An objective is set for English, Mathematics and Spanish so that students know what their next steps should be.
Reports have the following format:
Attainment
✦ Working Above Expectations
✦ Working At Expectations
✦ Working Towards Expectations
✦ Working Below Expectations
Effort
✦ Excellent ✦ Good ✦ Satisfactory ✦ Unsatisfactory
Academic Results
During the third and final term of Primary, Year 6 pupils sit their End of Primary Tests (EPTs) which are formative assessments in English Reading, Maths and Science. These assessments are produced by GL Assessment, the leading provider for formative assessments in the UK so we are able to compare our pupils to the National Average.
Our pupils achieve excellent academic results with a high percentage of pupils working above expectations by UK standard.
Below you can find the percentage of pupils in Year 6 who were Working Above Expectations or Working Well Above Expectations.
Subject | At Expectations | Above Expectations | Well Above Expectations |
Reading | 54% | 36% | 6% |
Maths | 46% | 31% | 18% |
Science | 38% | 32% | 30% |
GL National Average | 54% | 19% | 4% |
Psychologist and Special Educational Needs
Our team works closely with our teaching staff to help pupils achieve the objectives, monitor their progress in all areas and provide them with any necessary support.
This may involve support in or outside of the classroom where they can work on specific academic objectives. This department is responsible for continuously reviewing the academic and social progress of pupils.
Focusing on Values
We offer a curriculum that delves into the human development of pupils, with the goal of fostering a sense of solidarity which we believe is essential for living in a sustainable world.
Our pupils learn the values that are necessary for them to become responsible citizens through educational activities in the classroom.
In our educational programme for all years, we include termly topics and resources related to environmental protection, solidarity, health, and social inclusion.
